The British era in Wisconsin begins with the occupation of Green Bay by British forces in 1761 near the end of the French and Indian War. It ends in 1816 with the building of American forts in Prairie Du Chien and Green Bay. The era was marked by open trade and a laissez faire attitude toward Wisconsin tribes - a peaceful interlude before the arrival of Americans, acquisition of native land by various means and the arrival of European settlers.
