Since 1972, the August Derleth Award is given yearly to the best British fantasy and, since 2012, best horror novel. Derleth was a writer, editor, publisher and lifelong Wisconsin resident. In 1939, he founded the publishing company Arkham House to preserve and promote the work of a nearly forgotten author named H P Lovecraft....the rest is history. The award depicts Lovecraft's most famous creation, Cthulu. It all happened in Sauk City.
