Milwaukee, 1868. Christopher Latham Sholes, Carlos Gildden and Samuel W Soule patended the world's first practical typewriter. Sholes kept improving the device. His greatest contribution, and for over a century a common sight to hundreds of millions of people all over the world, was the QWERTY keyboard. Further modifications of the layout by Sholes and the Remington Typewriter Co. continued into the late 1890's. QWERTY has survived well into the digital age.
